JMU-online magazine features our project work on cobalt mines in Congo

January 27, 2026

The online magazine “Einblick” of our Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg reports today on our new project at our Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) titled “Transparenz im Rohstoffabbau: Fernerkundungsgestützte Detektion und Quantifizierung von Kobaltminen im Globalen Süden [engl. Transparency in resource extraction: Remote sensing-based detection and quantification of cobalt mines in the Global South]” This project is funded by the KSB Foundation.

The aim of this project is to develop methods based on remote sensing data for the identification, localization and quantification of cobalt mines and to analyze spatial dynamics over time. Furthermore it is the goal to analyze relations to settlement and population development in the surroundings of the mines.
