The University of Würzburg’s online magazine einBLICK has covered the award ceremony at which Prof. Stefan Dech received the Bavarian State Medal for Outstanding Services to the Environment on 21 October 2026.
The award recognizes his long-standing contributions to Earth observation and its application to environmental monitoring, climate change adaptation, and sustainable planning. As highlighted in the official commendation by the Bavarian State Minister for the Environment and Consumer Protection, Thorsten Glauber, Stefan Dech has helped establish Earth observation as an important tool for understanding environmental change and supporting practical decision-making.
His achievements also include developing the Chair of Remote Sensing at the University of Würzburg into an internationally recognized research centre, supported by its close collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Beyond research, he has worked to make scientific results accessible to a wider audience through publications and exhibitions, helping raise awareness of global environmental change.
Another important aspect of his work is translating Earth observation research into practical solutions, particularly for climate change adaptation and environmental management. His commitment to developing young researchers and strengthening research structures was also acknowledged.
The recognition reflects the importance of connecting scientific research with practical applications and public understanding of environmental challenges.
