Richard Lemoine Rodríguez gives a talk at DLR

December 15, 2023

On 15th of December, Dr. Richard Lemoine Rodríguez gave a presentation at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen, in the seminar of the department “Georisks and Civil Security”. His talk was titled “Urban morphology and human mobility: Insights from remote sensing and geolocated social media data“.

Here is the abstract for his talk: The urban living space has developed very dynamically over the last few years. With remote sensing, it is obvious to capture the built environment, analyze the spatial patterns and document temporal changes. However, the built landscape can also be seen as a stage for all kinds of social dynamics. Against this background, new, different geodata are becoming increasingly relevant for synergistic approaches to analyze the urban physical and social spaces. In this lecture, examples along this strand will be presented: First, global regularities underlying the evolution of urban form as measured from remote sensing data will be presented. Subsequently, the intraurban heterogeneity of land surface temperatures will be discussed, showing examples of cities located in diverse climates. Finally, the potential of geolocated social media data to monitor human mobility and identify migrants’ needs will be illustrated by the case of migrants from the war in Ukraine. With these examples, the capabilities of remote sensing to assess the spatiotemporal facets of both physical and social issues through heterogeneous datasets will be displayed.
