Sarah joined the EORC in April 2025 as a PhD student in the DFG project “SOS: Serverless-Scientific-Computing and -Engineering for Earth Observation and Sustainability Research”.
After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Biology at the University of Hohenheim, she pursued her M.Sc. degree in Applied Earth Observation and Geoanalysis (EAGLE) at the University of Würzburg.
Sarah gained practical experience through internships at Remote Sensing Solutions (RSS) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), where she worked on automatically mapping crevasses on Alpine glaciers from high-resolution aerial imagery using deep learning. For her Master thesis, she stayed at DLR and analyzed glacier dynamics on the Antarctic Peninsula using high performance computing.
Her doctoral research will focus on analyzing globally distributed Earth observation data using artificial intelligence to quantify and predict the impact of climate change on snow cover and snowmelt dynamics. To this end, she is developing workflows consisting of reusable, generic, and domain-specific components to support interdisciplinary research.
