EORC Talk: Bridging Disciplines in the Age of AI and Global Data

EORC Talk: Bridging Disciplines in the Age of AI and Global Data

April 13, 2026

Today’s EORC Talk was more than just a lecture. It was a vivid reminder of how dynamic and interconnected modern science has become. We were delighted to host Meeyoung Cha, Scientific Director from the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP), who delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking presentation titled “AI, Society, and Computing: Leveraging Global Data While Tackling Ethical Challenges.”

A Broader Lens on Earth Observation

For a community rooted in Earth observation, today’s talk expanded the horizon in an exciting way. Professor Cha illustrated how combining multi-modal data, e.g., from satellite imagery to digital traces of human activity, enables powerful applications such as poverty mapping, disaster response, and socioeconomic analysis.

Her message resonated strongly: remote sensing is no longer just about observing the planet. Rather, it is about understanding society within the planetary system.

Responsibility in the Age of AI

Alongside these opportunities, Meeyoung Cha addressed the growing challenges posed by large-scale AI systems. Issues like bias, misinformation, and systemic risks are not abstract, they are shaping real-world outcomes.

Yet, the tone of the talk was far from pessimistic. Instead, it was a call to action. Through thoughtful design, interdisciplinary collaboration, and responsible data practices, we can ensure that AI systems remain aligned with human-centered values and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.

Science Across Boundaries

One of the most inspiring aspects of the talk was Meeyoung Cha’s own journey, working across academia, industry, and international organizations, including Meta, Microsoft, the United Nations Global Pulse, and the World Customs Organization. Her career reflects a growing reality: the most impactful science happens at the intersections.

Meeyoung Cha (EORC Talk presenter, center), together with members of her research group and Hannes Taubenböck with his team at the EORC, are bringing together expertise from data science and Earth observation to foster interdisciplinary exchange.

EORC Talks: A Space for Exchange

This is exactly the spirit that the EORC Talk series aims to foster.

The EORC is actively expanding this format to bring together scientists from different research fields, creating a platform where Earth observation meets data science, social sciences, AI, and beyond. These exchanges are designed to spark new ideas, encourage collaboration, and explore how diverse expertise can jointly address global challenges.

Join the Conversation

We are excited to continue this journey.

Announcements for upcoming EORC Talks will be shared regularly, and we warmly invite everyone, whether you are a remote sensing expert or researcher in neighboring disciplines, to join us. Whether you are working with satellite data, developing AI methods, or studying societal systems, these talks are an opportunity to connect, learn, and contribute.

Stay tuned, and we hope to see you at the next EORC Talk!
