December 8, 2025

A new book titled “Data-Driven Earth Observation for Disaster Management – From Theory to Practical Applications” edited by Xiao Huang, Siqin Wang, Kleomenis Kalogeropoulos and Andreas Tsatsaris is published. https://shop.elsevier.com/books/data-driven-earth-observation-for-disaster-management/huang/978-0-443-33803-8 The book delves into the critical role of Earth observation data and technologies in predicting, managing, and mitigating a spectrum of disasters. With a multidisciplinary approach encompassing geography and geospatial science, it addresses the challenges of comprehending and managing disasters in our rapidly changing world.

Christian Geiß, Patrick Aravena Pelizari and Hannes Taubenböck contributed a chapter to this book titled “Seismic exposure and risk assessment”. In this chapter, they show how the latest EO missions, the accessibility of remote sensing data archives, the integration of complementary geospatial data sources, and the expanded potential for precise thematic interpretation of multimodal geospatial data through advanced ML and AI methods collectively enable a wide range of applications in natural hazard risk and impact assessment.
