Our research on informal settlements was highlighted in the journal Nature Cities

A recent article from our Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) has been featured as a research highlight in the journal Nature Cities, one of the world’s leading scientific journals focused on urban studies. This recognition shines a spotlight on vital research that aims to better understand and address the living conditions of those in informal settlements, often referred to as slums or deprived areas.

The study delves into the challenges of accurately representing informal settlements in both data and public discourse. Although the United Nations estimates that people in slums comprise over 10 percent of the global population, this research suggests the actual numbers may be much higher, underscoring a potentially significant underestimation. By leveraging earth observation technology, the team works to make these communities more visible in both media and policy discussions, aiming to ensure they receive the attention and resources they urgently need. This article highlights the growing importance of using innovative methods to document and advocate for urban populations that are too often overlooked.
