Our Professor Hannes Taubenböck invited Prof. Dr. Yuyu Zhou from Iowa State University to present at the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in the seminar of the department “Georisks and Civil Security”. On the 28th of April, Prof. Zhou gave a inspiring talk titled: Urban environmental change and its implications for building energy demand.

Here is more information on his talk:

Our home planet is experiencing an unprecedented period of urbanization, which is expected to continue across the next few decades. To achieve sustainable urban development, there is a pressing need for an improved understanding of the complex urban systems undergoing this urbanization, requiring integrated efforts across disciplines, methods, and scales. This seminar will present our recent studies, which focus on characterizing historical and future urban dynamic as well as the associated urban environmental changes from local to global scales using satellite remote sensing observations and developed modeling capabilities. The impact of urban environmental changes on building energy demand will also be explored in the seminar. The resultant products, models, and findings from this study will greatly contribute to advancing our understanding of the coupled urban-nature system under urbanization for sustainability in the context of climate change.
