DLR Symposium on Applied Satellite Earth Observation in Bonn

June 29, 2023

Over the past three days, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) invited the national Earth Observation community to its 4th Symposium on Applied Satellite Earth Observation“ in Bonn. Due to the large number of participants, for the first time this year’s event took place in the excellent facilities of the World Conference Center, on the quite historic grounds of the former Bundestag parliament. Among the participants, the Earth Observation Research Hub of the University of Würzburg was also well represented, with several staff members as well as EAGLE students attending, which are now returning with a lot of inspiration from the manifold contributions

With an extensive array of talks, the symposium succeeded in showcasing recent advances as well as the exciting future of satellite-based Earth Observation in a very varied range of topics. For instance, sessions touched upon the fields of EO and AI for climate protentional and adaptation as well as natural hazard management, show-cased intriguing success stories from start-ups in New Space and discussed new missions. It was also highly successful in bringing together the people that work in this field, as the event offered researchers, application and service developers as well as data users’ plentiful opportunities for dialog, thereby strengthening the exchange and promoting networking of participants in the long term.

Our PhD candiate Sebastian Förtsch also presented his research of tree type classification of bavarian forest using Sentinel time-series data.
