New publication on ecosystem services of city trees.

May 29, 2024

New publication in the German journal “AFZ-DerWald” on our works on ecosystem services of city trees.

Researchers from the Earth Observation Center (EOC) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the Sachverständigenbüro für Luftbildauswertung und Umweltfragen (SLU) and our Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) of the University of Würzburg contributed an article titled “Estimating the ecosystem services of urban trees [Abschätzung der Ökosystemleistungen von Stadtbäumen]”. The article was just published [in German] in the journal AFZ-DerWald by Tobias Leichtle, Andrea Sofia Garcia de Leon, Thomas Rötzer, Klaus Martin, Stephan Pauleit and Hannes Taubenböck.

Here is the abstract of the paper [translated to English]: Urban trees provide various ecosystem services, e.g. by reducing heat stress and improving air quality. Based on up-to-date Earth Observation data and methods, it is possible to detect, characterize and classify urban trees. The process-based tree growth model “CityTree” can be used to simulate ecosystem services for individual trees depending on their individual characteristics and environmental conditions. The combination of these techniques allows a comprehensive assessment of the ecosystem services of the entire urban tree stock.
