UAS thermal testing for Arctic field work

UAS thermal testing for Arctic field work

December 10, 2024

To evaluate methodologies for their upcoming Arctic field mission, Lena Jäger and Jannis Midasch (EAGLE students) conducted an overnight field test utilizing a thermal UAS sensor under low-ambient temperature conditions. The test site, located near campus but distant from artificial light and heat sources, simulated Arctic night conditions. Employing modified GCPs, the students assessed the sensitivity and limitations of UAS data alignment and thermal sensor calibration.

Subsequent analysis in the lab will involve processing the acquired UAS imagery using developed R scripts to assess sensor applicability. Pre-field mission testing will continue to optimize data acquisition and maximize the scientific return of the Arctic field deployment scheduled for next year.

More updates on their research will be posted on this webpage in the next weeks and months.

The MSc thesis and internship are done with our international EAGLE M.Sc. progamm in cooperation with UNIS and is supervised by Dr. Mirjana Bevanda.
