Exploring the Exposome: An Invited Talk at the DGG Convention

February 4, 2025

At the annual convention of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG) in Berlin, John Friesen from the EORC presented “Umweltfaktoren und kardiovaskuläre Gesundheit: Das Exposom in der modernen Gefäßmedizin” (Environmental Factors and Cardiovascular Health: The Exposome in Modern Vascular Medicine), highlighting how remote sensing helps understand environmental influences on vascular diseases.

The exposome encompasses all environmental exposures throughout life, including air pollution, noise, and socioeconomic stressors. Unlike static genetic factors, it continuously interacts with human biology, affecting cardiovascular health. Remote sensing provides valuable data on air pollution, urban heat islands, green spaces, and much more. Pollutants like PM2.5 and NO2, linked to vascular diseases, can be monitored and correlated with health data.

Understanding the exposome enables targeted interventions and informed public health strategies. Remote sensing data help identify high-risk areas, support precision medicine, and guide urban planning. John emphasized the need for collaboration between medical professionals, environmental scientists, and remote sensing experts to advance disease prevention and treatment.

The DGG convention provided an excellent platform to discuss these critical topics, underscoring the growing importance of remote sensing in cardiovascular health research.
