After the completely surprising win of the Science Slam in Würzburg in November 2024 (we reported about it: https://remote-sensing.org/hannes-taubenbock-represents-eorc-at-the-science-slam-and-wins/), Hannes Taubenböck was invited to the Science Slam in Rosenheim. The event took place in front of a sold-out audience in the event rooms of the Rosenheim City Library on 22 February 2025. The evening was hosted by Markus Berg in a very humorous way: https://www.stadttipps-rosenheim.de/veranstaltungskalender/auffuehrung/science-slam-stadtbibliothek.html
The Science Slam is a presentation competition in which the slammers present their research topics to an audience in a popular scientific manner within 10 minutes. Despite strong competition – for example, the third place winner of the German championship was in the field of candidates – our Professor once again came out on top with his slam “Ich sehe was, was Du nicht siehst, und das ist …..”.
In his slam, Hannes Taubenböck introduced the field of research of his team at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and our Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) – urban remote sensing. He showed that sometimes you have to change your perspective in order to understand the world in a new or different way. And, remote sensing from space does just that. He showed how surprisingly humankind sometimes shapes the land surface, what ideas they pursue with it and how these findings may help to organize the scarce space on our planet more sensibly. In doing so, he not only poked fun at himself but also held up a mirror to the audience.
