New review on slums and urban deprived areas

New review on slums and urban deprived areas

September 5, 2025

Researchers from TU Darmstadt, Karlstad University in Sweden, and our Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) at Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg collaborated on a new study that looks at how science addresses urban deprived areas and slums worldwide. The paper, titled “Bibliometric and scoping study of research on urban deprived areas and slums”, was just published in Discover Cities by Katharina Henn, Michaela Leštáková, Kevin Logan, Jakob Hartig, Stefanos Georganos, and John Friesen.

The study analyzed nearly 4,000 scientific articles to identify where research has been conducted, which disciplines are most active, and where important gaps remain. It shows that most work has focused on countries like India, South Africa, Kenya, and Brazil, and that health and social sciences dominate the field, while technological perspectives are still underrepresented.

John Friesen worked on an earlier draft of the paper during his research stay at Karlstad University, Sweden at the end of 2023 and served as senior author of the publication.
