Keynote presentation at the GESIS Workshop “Earth Observation Data in the Social Sciences”

November 26, 2025

The GESIS International Expert Workshop titled “Earth Observation Data in the Social Sciences” is held in Cologne, Germany, from November 26 to 28. The three-day workshop focuses on the linking of Earth observation data with social science data sources.

On the first day, Prof. Dr. Hannes Taubenböck was invited to give the opening keynote presentation. His talk titled “Sociology with data from space – About possibilities and limits” gave an overview of studies made possible by the interaction of remote sensing and other geodata (census, panel, survey data, and (social) media data as well as data from urban geography). His presentation was also a plea for the multi- and interdisciplinary combination of data, concepts and methods in order to arrive at new findings.
