Volcanologist from Alaska visited DLR

On April 29, 2025, our habilitation candidate and lecturer Dr. Simon Plank welcomed Prof. Ronni Grapenthin from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, an expert in Geodesy for the analysis of earthquakes and volcanoes, to DLR. Prof. Grapenthin is also affiliated with the Alaska Volcano Observatory and the Alaska Earthquake Center.

During his visit to DLR, Prof. Grapenthin gave a presentation entitled: “2020-2023 Aleutian Megathrust earthquakes and possibly related unrest at Aniakchak Caldera … and a brief overview of
ongoing unrest at Mt. Spurr”.

Simon Plank is collaborating with Prof. Grapenthin and other colleagues at the Alaska Volcano Observatory and the USGS in satellite-based monitoring of volcanoes in the Alaska-Aleutian Volcanic Arc. A fascinating example is the ongoing dome growing activity at Great Sitkin Volcano since July 2021: https://avo.alaska.edu/image/view/195691
