“Futures” – Hannes Taubenböck contributes to the VHS Munich seminar series

January 21, 2026

The “Open Academy”, the Adult Education Centre in Munich has once again invited our Professor Hannes Taubenböck to contribute to current debates in their series titeld “Zukünfte [engl. Futures]”. https://www.mvhs.de/kurse/offene-akademie/globale-urbanisierung-perspektiven-aus-dem-all-zu-einem-megatrend-460-C-V314309

Whether science, politics or the media – the future is on everyone’s lips today. Between curiosity, worries and hopes, innovations and forecasts, a wide variety of future narratives and perspectives can be discovered. Migration to the cities on our planet is a narrative and a megatrend of the past and the future.

Yesterday there was a lecture on this story by Hannes Taubenböck entitled “Globale Urbanisierung – Perspektiven aus dem All zu einem Megatrend [engl. Global urbanization – perspectives from space on a megatrend]”. The talk was about the largest migration ever experienced by mankind: from the countryside to the cities. Forecasts predict 2.3 billion more people on our planet by 2050 – and most of them will be living in cities. Remote sensing data from space visualize physical and demographic transformation processes on our planet. In the talk, he introduced the incredible dynamics of global urbanization illustrated by satellite data, he showcased the newly developed large sizes of cities, discussed urban forms and their effects, what to expect in the coming decades, and basically if urbanization is good or bad for mankind.
