Hannes Taubenböck wins the science slam of the Münchner Lach- und Schiessgesellschaft

June 21, 2026

It really is quite something where our work takes us from time to time – be it the ESA headquarters, some German ministries, or fieldwork in bad weather in some forest. This time, our work has taken us to the venerable stage of the Münchner Lach- und Schiessgesellschaft.

It was an honor for us that our Professor Hannes Taubenböck was invited to the Science Slam ’10 hoch 1′ representing the Earth Observation Center of the DLR and our Earth Observation Research Cluster of the JMU. And, he was even able to win the scientific competition with his funny and thought-provoking science slam “Saßen Sie schon mal in einem Zug nach Mumbai? – Forschung im Grenzbereich zwischen Armut, Reichtum und Moral” [engl.: “Have you ever been on a train to Mumbai? – Research on the borderline between poverty, wealth and morality“]”. Together with Daniel Klüh, they took first place and received the loudest applause from the audience.

It was a very humorous evening in which science was presented in an entertaining way and in many facets. In the scientific short lecture tournament, everything is allowed to elicit the loudest applause from the audience. The event has once again made it possible to bring science into society.
