We contributed to the Earth observation sessions. Hannes Taubenböck gave a presentation entitled ‘Erdbeobachtung in Zeiten globaler Krisen: Wie KI und Fernerkundung die Welt neu sehen‘ [engl.: ‘Earth observation in times of global crises: How AI and remote sensing are seeing the world in a new light‘]. The accompanying extended abstract is a joint contribution from the EOC of DLR and our EORC at JMU by Hannes, Monika Gähler, Torsten Riedlinger, Richard Lemoine-Rodriguez, Doris Klein and Christian Geiß.
The presentation used numerous examples to demonstrate how remote sensing and artificial intelligence are radically changing our perception of the world – not only by enabling us to see the Earth from space, but also by granting a new form of power: the power of knowledge from afar. Earth observation from space, from aeroplanes, drones and ground-based sensors, as well as the monitoring of digital information online, have become key sources of information for decision-makers and the public alike in a changing world. Earth observation makes it possible to map the diverse traces left by climate change, geopolitical developments or social transformations, and to analyse and better undertstand the underlying processes using spatial statistics.
