Sofia studied Environmental Engineering in Guatemala at the University of San Carlos (USAC). After finishing her bachelor’s degree, she worked for a couple of years in remote sensing applications, which motivated her to come to Germany to join the EAGLE graduate program. Sofia conducted her internship and master’s thesis in the City and Society team from the German Aerospace Center. She worked on mapping city morphology and estimating socioeconomic indicators using nighttime light images. In May 2022, Sofia joined the Department of Remote Sensing as a PhD student as part of the project DBU-Urban trees and ecosystem services. Her current interests lie in urban applications of remote sensing, especially related to urban green, individual tree characterization, and environmental inequality.
