CAIDAS, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science ( https://www.caidas.uni-wuerzburg.de/ ), was officially opened on April 19, 2024 with prominent guests from politics and science.

Bavaria’s Minister of Science Markus Blume cut the ribbon for the new building: “The next highlight of our AI mission: the opening of CAIDAS in Würzburg. The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science will finally make the Julius-Maximilians-Universität the AI Mecca on the Main. AI research is being rethought here – and made perfect: the focus is on data processing and research is interdisciplinary – eight faculties are on board. This shows that artificial intelligence is an important tool for all faculties. We are only at the beginning of a new AI era. The biggest danger is not being part of it and leaving the field to others. In Bavaria, we are on board: we want to shape AI with our data and according to our values. With CAIDAS, JMU is ensuring that AI is spelled Bavarian.”

Our Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) is with the Chair of Global Urbanization and Remote Sensing hold by our professor Hannes Taubenböck part of CAIDAS ( https://www.caidas.uni-wuerzburg.de/research-groups/global-urbanization-and-remote-sensing/ ).

Dr. Martin Wegmann planned and organized our contribution to the opening ceremony. Together with Hannes Taubenböck our doctoral student Ariane Droin and our EAGLE student Anna Bischof presented our works to representatives from politics, research and society. We also thank the many EORC members that supported the organization of the event.

The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science of the JMU Würzburg conducts research in in Machine Learning, Data Science, Image and Text Analysis, AI Systems, Ethics/Legal/Societal Acceptance, and Economy and Transfer within the  four central application pillars: AI for Life Science, Human-Centered AI, AI in Digital Humanities, Economics/Law and AI. The methods for these applications are also researched at CAIDAS in the underlying area Foundations of AI and Data Science.
