Almost a year ago, Josipa Subotic showed up at EORC as a DBU scholar, and now her stay with us is coming to an end. Josipa spent her time digging into snow cover properties around the Zugspitze, working with Sentinel-2 time series data. Multispectral imagery, lots of it, stretched out over time, that’s the kind of dataset that looks straightforward until you actually sit down with it – especially in the area of Zugspitze. She was analysing what the snow was doing across the seasons in one of the most photographed mountains in Germany. Along the way she improved her R programming skills, going from someone learning the basics to someone who could confidently run her own analyses. A lot of that progress came down to the people around her. She spent a good chunk of her year in conversation with our PhDs and postdocs, going back and forth on methods, testing ideas, figuring out what actually works versus what just sounds good on paper. That kind of exchange is exactly what we hope visiting scholars get out of their time here, and it clearly paid off for her work. But it wasn’t all data and code. Josipa made a point of getting to know people beyond the office too, joining in on the social side of life at EORC, and by all accounts she genuinely enjoyed her time with us. So as she wraps up her stay, we just want to say thanks, Josipa. Thanks for the hard work on the Zugspitze snow data, thanks for bringing energy into the group, and thanks for being the kind of scholar who makes a research cluster feel like a community. We wish her all the best in whatever comes next, and we hope this won’t be the last we see of her.
