After completing their internship in Kruger National Park, EAGLE students Sebastian and Clemens were not quite ready to leave South Africa behind. Instead of heading straight home, they reunited with their South African EAGLE friend, Charl Strydom, for a road trip across the country. What followed became much more than a journey between destinations – it was an opportunity to reconnect, explore, and experience South Africa beyond the internship environment.

Travelling through changing landscapes, small towns, and long open roads, the group discovered a different side of the country. Each stop brought new impressions, from local food and conversations with residents to unexpected moments that only happen during road trips. The experience allowed Sebastian and Clemens to see South Africa not only as interns, but also as travellers and friends.

One of the highlights of the journey was the visit to North-West University in the city of Potchefstroom. Together, the group explored the campus and gained insight into student life in South Africa. The atmosphere felt both familiar and different compared to universities in Europe. While many aspects of student life – studying together, campus activities, and social events – were similar, the local culture and environment gave the university its own unique character.

Walking through the campus, Sebastian and Clemens were impressed by the welcoming atmosphere and the strong sense of community among students. Discussions with local students also highlighted how international academic connections can create lasting friendships and open new perspectives. Through the EAGLE program, students from different countries are able to build relationships that continue far beyond lectures and internships.

The road trip itself became a reflection of those international friendships. Long drives between destinations turned into conversations about studies, future plans, and cultural differences. Sharing experiences from both Europe and South Africa created a deeper understanding of each other’s backgrounds and everyday lives.

Looking back, the journey showed that the EAGLE program is not only about academic opportunities and professional experience. It is also about the people met along the way, the friendships formed across borders, and the memories created together. For Sebastian, Clemens, and Charl, the road trip across South Africa became a meaningful ending to their time abroad and perhaps the beginning of many future reunions.
