CHARM-EU lecture on “Global urbanization: perspectives from space”

February 14, 2026

CHARM‑EU (Challenge-driven, Accessible, Research-Based, and Mobile European University) is a pioneering alliance of nine European universities working together to build a transformative, inclusive, and sustainability‑oriented model for higher education. Guided by European values, the European Green Deal, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, CHARM‑EU develops joint programmes, innovative teaching formats, and challenge-based learning experiences across its partner institutions.

On the 13th of February, within the framework of the CHARM‑EU Master’s in Global Challenges for Sustainability, our Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) had the opportunity to contribute. Prof. Hannes Taubenböck gave a lecture on “Global urbanization: perspectives from space”, presenting the collaborative works of our EORC with the Earth Observation Center (EOC) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The lecture involved the students in a truly transdisciplinary and international learning environment—embodying CHARM‑EU’s mission to equip the students to address real-world societal challenges in the urban context.

Our colleague Prof. Matthias Naumann (Chair of Human Geography, also from JMU Würzburg) also taught within this programme yesterday on the topic Energy and the City. Definition and Overview about Current Developments in Research and Practice” and Dr. Michael Thiel has given a lecture within CHARM EU last autumn.

We very much look forward to further engagements with the CHARM-EU students, for instance with our colleagues Dr. John Friesen who will teach on Urban infrastructure and its resilience or Dr. Florian Betz who’s topic is on Earth Observation in water management within the Water Track of the Master programme.
