Dr. Ines Standfuß and Dr. Jeroen Staab were honored by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU)

November 4, 2025

At the Earth Observation Center (EOC) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and at our Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) at the University in Würzburg, we are proud of the achievements of our former doctoral researchers. Recently Dr. Ines Standfuß and Dr. Jeroen Staab, who have successfully completed their PhDs, were honored by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) for their exceptional contributions to environmental science.

From DBU Scholars to Pioneers in Their Fields

Both Ines and Jeroen began their academic journeys with the support of the DBU PhD Scholarship Program, which fosters young researchers working on innovative and impactful environmental solutions. Their work exemplifies how early support can lead to groundbreaking research with real-world applications.

Bridging Urban Ecology and Migration Patterns

Ines explored the interaction between urban structures and the behavior of migratory birds, specifically the white stork. Her research combined remote sensing and movement ecology to analyze how settlement patterns influence bird migration, nesting, and feeding habits. Her findings, published in leading journals, provide valuable insights for conservation efforts and sustainable urban planning. https://remote-sensing.org/ines-standfus-has-successfully-defended-her-dissertation/

Mapping Noise Pollution from Space

Jeroen developed a novel approach to noise mapping using satellite data and machine learning. His work enables large-scale, high-resolution noise assessments, helping cities identify and mitigate noise pollution more effectively. His research has been widely cited and contributes to healthier urban environments. https://remote-sensing.org/jeroen-staab-successfully-defended-his-phd-thesis/

Recognition at the German Environmental Award Ceremony

Their achievements were celebrated during the German Environmental Award ceremony in Chemnitz, where they received their certificates in a festive setting. This recognition underscores the impact of their research and the importance of supporting early-career scientists in environmental fields.

A Legacy of Innovation and Impact

The DBU PhD Scholarship Program plays a crucial role in nurturing young talent, enabling researchers like Ines and Jeroen to develop practical, science-based solutions for environmental challenges. Their success stories highlight the value of interdisciplinary research and the long-term benefits of investing in young scientists.

We congratulate Ines and Jeroen on their well-deserved recognition and look forward to their continued contributions to science and society.
