On July 9, 2026, Daniel Gruschwitz and Sonja Maas from the Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) presented their current research in EO4CAM at the GeoSeries – Research Colloquium of the Institute of Geography and Geology, University of Würzburg, chaired by Prof. Dr. Heiko Paeth. Before the presentations, Dr. Julian Fäth gave a brief introduction to the EO4CAM project and its mission to develop Earth observation-based products supporting Bavarian authorities in climate adaptation and introduced the two speakers.
Daniel Gruschwitz presented his research on modelling grassland floristic diversity in Bavaria. By combining plant species occurrence records with climate, soil, terrain and satellite-derived information, the study investigates the potential of remote sensing to improve high-resolution biodiversity monitoring.
Sonja Maas presented her work on remote sensing for forest management. Her research compares terrestrial, mobile, UAV-based and airborne LiDAR platforms for deriving forest structural parameters and investigates the potential of Earth observation to identify forest stands predisposed to bark beetle attacks.
Together, the presentations highlighted the potential of Earth observation to support biodiversity monitoring and climate-adaptive forest management in Bavaria.
