EORC and DLR are contributing to The 40th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment #2

March 20, 2025

Our EORC and the EOC of DLR continue to contribute to The 40th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE), which currently takes place in Farnborough, UK. https://isrse40.com/

On 19th of March, Prof. Hannes Taubenböck from DLR and our EORC gave a keynote presentation titled “Remote Sensing for the Analysis of Global Urbanization – A story about knowledge and ignorance”. In his talk he traced the arc of urban dynamics and dimensions and their spatially uneven distribution on our planet. He discussed the effects of urban form and whether urbanization in recent decades has been space-saving. And he pointed out possibilities and the need for adapting our cities. With it, he posed the critical question of whether we are socially prepared to do so.

In addition, Hannes Taubenböck also chaired a technical session titled “Urban Climate Change: Earth Observation for Resilient Cities and Sustainable Environments”. And, he moderated a special session and panel discussion titled “Space Data for Smart and Sustainable Developing Cites and Green Spaces”.

The participants of the panel on “Unlocking Evidence-Based Policy with Remote Sensing” (please also see here: https://remote-sensing.org/eorc-and-dlr-are-contributing-to-the-40th-international-symposium-on-remote-sensing-of-environment-1/ ) also engaged in lively discussions after the panel. Convened by Alexandra Bell, a former EORC PhD student now working at DLR, and Doris Klein from EOC, the session included sharing perspectives from ESA as an agency, the consultancy hiALtitude and the private company Geoville. They explored how remote sensing can contribute to better informed decision-making and overcome barriers.
