EORC Talk: Strengthening Earth Observation Capacity for Biodiversity Conservation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

May 20, 2026

How can Earth Observation support biodiversity conservation and strengthen local research capacities in Central Africa?

In his EORC Talk, Jean-Paul Kibambe Lubamba from the University of Kinshasa presents the experiences and impact of the EOCap4Africa initiative, developed in collaboration with the University of Würzburg. The project focuses on building expertise in Earth Observation, remote sensing, and GIS for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem monitoring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The talk offers insights into hands-on training activities, open-source technologies, and innovative teaching approaches designed for students and early-career researchers. It also highlights inspiring success stories emerging from the initiative — including the academic journey of Ms. Espérance Kandjale, who joined the EAGLE Master Program at the University of Würzburg. Beyond the project itself, the presentation explores future perspectives for international collaboration, research partnerships, and academic exchange between Kinshasa and Würzburg.

Thursday, 21 May 2026, 2:00 p.m.
