New guest scientist from Ghana: Ernest Biney

We would like to welcome Ernest Biney as new guest scientist here in Würzburg to cooperate with Dr. Michael Thiel, Itohan-Osa Abu and other team members. Ernest is a Ph.D. student affiliated with WASCAL-KNUST, Ghana. His passion lies in unraveling the intricate relationship between climate hazards and urban expansion. Currently, he is engrossed in a study titled “Assessment of Urban Expansion and Climate Change Impact in Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of Ghana”.

Since the production of oil in commercial quantities in 2010, Sekondi-Takoradi, which is the closest major city to the oil field has been experiencing changes in its physical landscape due to pressure on land for various development. Unfortunately, these changes have put the city at risk of experiencing climatic hazards such as urban heat and flooding which have consequences for the sustainability of the city.

Therefore, Ernest Biney employs geospatial techniques to investigate the combined effects of climate extreme events and urban expansion within the metropolis.
