Dissertation project “Stadtraumdiagnostik”

November 7, 2024

In her current dissertation project “Stadtraumdiagnostik”, Nina Haug is developing a method at KIT Karlsruhe to investigate human perception of public urban spaces. Prof. Markus Neppl (KIT Karlsruhe) and Prof. Dr. Hannes Taubenböck (JMU Würzburg/DLR) are supervising the work and Dr. Peter Zeile (KIT Karlsruhe) is mentoring.

The diagnostic methodology “Stadtraumdiagnostik” generally aims to identify stress-triggering factors in an urban context. The unique feature here is the holistic approach, which includes twelve investigation factors from different subject areas in the analyses. By translating the analysis results into the so-called “stressor matrix,” it is possible to relate both qualitative and quantitative factors to each other on an equal footing.

The approach has been successfully applied in four case studies in Karlsruhe and Osnabrück. Recently, the method was tested in the “Eichhornstraße” in Würzburg as part of the “SuperTestsite” project (see also here: https://remote-sensing.org/super-test-site-wurzburg-project-meeting-2/ ). There, emotion-sensing measurements have already detected some noticeable stress hotspots. With the diagnoses of “Stadtraumdiagnostik”, initial observations can already be made here concerning stress-triggering factors.
