Spotlight on our Researchers: Sonja Maas

May 1, 2026

Within the Earth Observation Research Cluster, Sonja Maas focuses on the analysis and monitoring of forest ecosystems using geospatial data.

Her work explores how remote sensing and spatial analysis can be applied to better understand forest structure, composition, and dynamics. By integrating satellite data with environmental variables, she investigates patterns in forest condition and their response to changing environmental factors.

A key aspect of her research is the assessment of forest health and variability across different spatial scales. This includes analyzing factors such as canopy structure, vegetation indices, and site conditions to derive meaningful insights into ecosystem processes.

In addition, Sonja is interested in how geospatial methods can support sustainable forest management by providing consistent, large-scale observations. Her work contributes to improving the monitoring of forests in the context of climate change and environmental stressors.

Her research reflects the broader goal of the Earth Observation Research Cluster: using Earth observation and spatial analysis to better understand and manage natural ecosystems
