Bridging Science and Culture: The EORC at the International Africa Festival

May 24, 2026

This weekend, the vibrant sounds and colors of the International Africa Festival took over Würzburg, and the Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) was again right at the heart of the action.
From May 22nd to 25th, 2026, our team Michael Thiel, Sarah Schönbrodt-Stitt, Sabine Oppmann, and Esperance Kandjale represent the EORC at the University of Würzburg’s dedicated tent. Situated in the lively setting of the festival in the city center, our booth became a hub for curious minds, researchers, and festival-goers eager to learn how remote sensing technology is helping to shape a more sustainable future for the African continent.
For four days, our team engaged with a diverse crowd of visitors. Whether explaining how satellite data helps monitor land use, tracking climate change impacts, or discussing our ongoing capacity-building training programs in Africa, the conversations were as inspiring as they were informative.
It was a fantastic opportunity to step outside the office, enjoy perfect sunshine and share our work in a space that celebrates African culture and international cooperation. Our discussions ranged from the technical intricacies of Earth observation to the broader goals of our research: improving agricultural resilience, protecting biodiversity, and fostering sustainable development through technology.
A massive thank you to everyone who visited the University tent and engaged in these important discussions. And of course all our EORC staff and students who helped to make it possible!
