EORC Joins Forces to Organize 54th Annual GfÖ Conference

January 31, 2025

We are excited to announce that the Earth Observation Research Cluster is proudly co-organizing the 54th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (GfÖ), scheduled for September 1-5, 2025, at the University of Würzburg. This event will bring together ecological scientists, researchers, and practitioners to address the pressing environmental challenges we face today.

One of the highlights of the conference will be a unique wine-tasting session held in the last remaining baroque wine cellar, a World Heritage site constructed by Balthasar Neumann between 1720 and 1744. This will be an excellent opportunity to relax, connect with peers, and experience a part of Würzburg’s rich cultural heritage.

Keynotes from renowned experts are already confirmed, including:

  • Anne Chao (National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan)
  • Zuzana Burivalova (University of Wisconsin-Madison, US)
  • Jos Barlow (Lancaster Environment Centre, UK)
  • Jean-Philippe Lessard (Concordia University, Canada)
  • Lorenzo Marini (University of Padua, Italy)

These speakers will provide valuable insights on various ecological topics, helping attendees to deepen their understanding of global environmental challenges.

The University of Würzburg’s contributions to the conference are supported by several chairs that specialize in diverse aspects of ecology. The Chair of Animal Ecology and Tropical Biology, Chair of Global Change Ecology, Chair of Conservation Biology & Forest Ecology, and Chair of Remote Sensing all bring their expertise to the conference’s theme:

“Ecological Systems Under Pressure: Challenges and Solutions.” This theme will serve as a platform for academics, policymakers, and practitioners to collaborate and brainstorm practical solutions to urgent ecological issues.

Participants can expect to engage in discussions that cover a broad spectrum of ecological research, from organismic ecology and biodiversity conservation to functional biodiversity studies and remote sensing applications. The conference will span topics ranging from tropical forests to temperate zone ecosystems, and even urban and agricultural landscapes.

As we prepare for the 54th Annual Meeting, we look forward to creating an interdisciplinary space where diverse ecological perspectives can come together to shape the future of environmental science and conservation practice.

We invite all ecologists, researchers, and environmental professionals to join us in Würzburg this September for what promises to be an enriching and impactful event.
