Small Gesture, Big Thanks: Chocolate in the Polar Bear Kitchen

Small Gesture, Big Thanks: Chocolate in the Polar Bear Kitchen

Pulling off a party for 250 people doesn’t happen by magic. It happens because a bunch of people quietly say yes to the boring jobs, the carrying, the setting up, the standing around answering questions, the cleaning up afterward. Our combined 25th anniversary for EORC and 10th anniversary for EAGLE was one of those events where the actual celebrating was maybe twenty percent of the work and everything else was logistics nobody sees.

Sabine had her hands on basically all of it. She carried the organization of the whole thing on her shoulders for weeks and months, and if you’ve ever run something at that scale you know what that really means: the endless small decisions, the fires that need putting out before anyone else even notices there was a fire, the mental list that never actually switches off. So when the event was over and done, most people would’ve just been glad to collapse for a day.

Instead she went the other way. She walked into our kitchen, the one everyone calls the polar bear kitchen because it is the kitchen on our northern aisle, and left chocolate and a handwritten thank you note for everyone who’d helped out during the week – waiting for whoever wandered in for a coffee.

And honestly, that’s the kind of thing that sticks with people way more than a formal speech would. It’s such a small gesture on paper, a bit of chocolate and a few written lines, but it says something real: that the work got noticed, that it mattered, and that the person who had every reason to be exhausted still took the time to say thanks properly.

So this one’s for Sabine. Thanks for running the show, and thanks for the chocolate.
