Our long-standing collaboration with Dr. Corli Coetsee and Dr. Ben Wigley from SANParks is moving forward with promising new research activities. The joint work is focusing on mapping savanna features more accurately such as trees, paths, or animals through innovative combinations of earth observation data and informatics approaches.
In todays discussions, Prof. Katharina Breininger and Dr. Mirjana Bevanda outlined the way ahead together with Dr. Coetsee and Dr. Wigley. Several scientific articles have already been prepared or submitted as part of this collaboration, in cooperation with other colleagues at the EORC, including Konstantin Müller and Dr. Jakob Schwalb-Willmann.
By applying machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques to earth observation data, the team aims to address specific conservation research needs in the savanna ecosystem. This approach not only strengthens ongoing collaborations but also brings mutual benefits to all partners involved—bridging conservation practice with cutting-edge research.
