Teaching activities in the Arctic: EORC at UNIS on Svalbard

m

October 15, 2026

It started a few years ago, when Mirjana Bevanda built up a collaboration with partners at UNIS, the University Centre in Svalbard. Jakob Schwalb-Willmann joined soon after, and today a growing group from EORC heads north to teach there, including Antonio Castaneda-Gomez and Sebastian Buchelt.
The topic is UAS-based earth observation, and we cover it from a few angles: ecology, botany and glaciology. We do research and training on drones over tundra vegetation, plant communities and snow and ice. Of course it is not exactly your average EAGLE classroom but it is a standard UNIS classroom – and our staff is happy to blend in.
And it’s a good deal for everyone. We deepen our ties to the colleagues at UNIS, we get more time for research activities, and, maybe most important, we help train a new generation of young scientists who see first-hand what earth observation can do in some of the most sensitive landscapes on the planet.
More detailed news posts about the individual courses will follow soon once Jakob and Sebastian are back from the high arctic, so stay tuned.
