Spotlight on our Researchers: The EORC “Science-Couch”

April 15, 2026

At the EORC office, not all important research happens in front of a computer screen. Some of the most profound discussions, brilliant ideas, and therapeutic rants actually take place on a very special piece of furniture: the legendary EORC “Science-Couch”.

Originally introduced to the office ecosystem of Ariane and Julia by our beloved Susi, the couch has since evolved into something of an institution. It sits quietly in the corner, always ready to host a spontaneous “science talk,” a five-minute sanity break, or a full-scale discussion about life, science, and why that one script still refuses to run.

Admittedly, the couch is not exactly new. In fact, its well-worn appearance tells a story. The slightly sagging cushions and the unmistakable “lived-in” look are a testament to the many researchers who have already sought comfort there. From stressed PhD students to post-deadline survivors, the couch has supported them all – literally and emotionally.

Despite its age (or perhaps because of it), the couch remains surprisingly cosy. It has become the unofficial meeting point of EORC: a place where people can sit down, vent about code errors, celebrate paper acceptances, brainstorm new ideas, or simply escape the glow of their screens for a few minutes.

Some say the couch has heard more confessions than a therapist and more research ideas than a conference coffee break.

So if you ever pass by the office and see two researchers deep in conversation on that slightly tired but very welcoming couch, don’t worry – no crisis is unfolding. It’s just another productive EORC science talk session in progress.

And who knows? The next great research idea might already be forming somewhere between those cushions.
