This week, EORC postdoc and EO4cam researcher Dr. Maninder Singh Dhillon presented work on a new product developed as part of the EO4cam project at the joint NSO-GfÖ 2026 conference in Odense, Denmark: A bavarian-wide biodiversity indicator for farmland that measures biodiversity based on various input variables such as crop rotation or nearby hedges. His talk, titled “A Remote Sensing-Based Farmland Habitat Biodiversity Indicator for Bavaria: A Landscape Ecology Approach”, sparked a lot of interest among the audience in the dedicated session “Biodiversity in Agricultural Landscapes”. The product is based on the recent Master thesis research by EAGLE M.Sc. student Suryia Elango, titled “Developing a Farmland Habitat Biodiversity Indicator for Bavaria (in line with OECD Guidelines)”.
Remote sensing products such as the EO4cam biodiversity indicator are of great interest to ecology research in the fields of agroecology, landscape ecology and more. Ready-to-use products are of particular interest for researchers that do not usually process satellite remote sensing data themselves. Besides his talk, Maninder took the honor to chair the session “Mapping and Modelling Ecological Change with Remote Sensing” later in the week, a session dedicated to remote sensing research for ecology.
The joint NSO-GfÖ 2026 conference is an ecology research conference taking place in Odense, Denmark this week, attended by nearly 1000 researchers. Jointly organised by the Nordic Society Oikos, representing the ecological societies of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland, and the Gesellschaft für Ökologie, representing Austria, Switzerland, and Germany, the conference has brought together researchers of diverse ecological research fields and research regions – from the High Arctic to Central Europe and beyond. The University of Würzburg was represented both through the contributions of the EORC as well as members of the Unviersity’s bio centre.
